Fishing for the Future

The New Zealand Big Game Fishing Council Inc (NZBGFC) is proud to introduce the Hiwi the Kiwi Goes Fishing project to the school children of New Zealand. With New Zealand being a country where you are never far from the sea, the NZBGFC believes that it is best to educate our children from an early age on how to best enjoy, manage, protect and preserve our marine environment.

Everybody knows that eating fish is healthy. Going fishing is also recognised as one of the most popular, not to mention healthy, activities undertaken by Kiwis, with over 1 in 4 ‘having a go' at it each year. As Kiwis we all want to ‘do the right thing'.

Mark de Lacy aka "The Minstrel" and Hiwi the Kiwi are already well known to a generation of Kiwi school children with their road show having toured extensively, entertaining and inspiring tens of thousands of children over the past 10 years.

Over 2009 The Minstrel has performed his Hiwi The Kiwi Goes Fishing show at over 90 primary schools in New Zealand. There will be a further 180 of the entertaining shows in 2010. In excess of 140 schools have already booked. If your school is interested in being visited by "The Minstrel" and his entertaining, humorous and instructive educational program, please      CLICK HERE to organise a show.

The Show is then fully supported by professionally written teaching resource material. It has created a fun way of teaching the children of New Zealand about our fishery and the marine environment and encourages the young people of today to participate in fishing and to enjoy the many opportunities that we are privileged to have in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Big Game Fishing Council Inc (NZBGFC) was established 52 years ago and is now by far the largest fishing representative body in New Zealand, comprising 59 clubs and their nearly 32000 members. While the name suggests otherwise, the Council's clubs and membership are, at heart, grassroots fishermen who simply enjoy fishing and gathering seafood. As such, the Council has evolved as an organisation that takes a substantial role in ensuring that New Zealand's fishery is well managed to provide food and enjoyment for future generations of New Zealanders.
